We all aspire to healthy shiny hair but it is not always possible without a little help.

There are so many reasons that cause dull and lifeless hair, and even hair loss. We know them: poor nutrition, lack of sleep, fumes from factories and even from cars trains etc., giving birth can even affect our luscious locks as baby takes the goodness from Mama in order to grow and be healthy itself, pressures of deadlines and so on and so forth. So from shiny hair to drab and lifeless we all go from time to time.

So, here we address not only the reasons but we go further to restore vitality and give you shiny hair again.

On this site you will find some tried and tested home remedies as well as some products that you may care to purchase as we head towards shiny hair (pardon the pun!)

Homespun Recipes for Healthy, Luxuriant, and Shiny Hair.

Top of the list is Aloe Vera.

You can buy aloe vera gel but what is even better, and in the long run, cheaper for you, is to purchase an aloe vera plant. Think, do you know someone who has an aloe vera plant in their garden? You may be able to get one for free. If planted in the ground this amazing plant grows baby plants. In a pot, there isn’t generally enough room for new plants to spread out from the adult plant. Pick up an aloe vera plant, pop it into the ground, the when you are going to give your head a treat, cut some of the fleshy leaf from it.

In order to use the aloe vera, take a potato peeler, peel down both sides then carefully peel the rounded front of the leaf, being careful not to take much of the actual gel inside the leaf with it. Remove the inside and mash it so that it becomes fluid, then apply to wet hair for 30 minutes washing out after that. Alternatively wash your hair and apply the gel after te conditioner is washed out. Come the gel through and leave it on.

Good old fashioned Apple Cider Vinegar

According to Haygood, apple cider vinegar (ACV) removes buildup and seals the hair cuticles, making hair more light-reflective and shiny. Bennett adds that the cleansing properties of ACV not only leave our hair and scalp exceptionally clean but also restore lustre and shine to dull hair. Additionally, it helps combat greasy hair.”

While it can be used directly to the hair it may not be wise if your hair is dry, so here is a recipe; Mix 2 to 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 16 ounces of water.

After shampooing and conditioning, pour the mixture over your hair evenly, working into your scalp.

Let it sit for a couple of minutes.

Rinse it out.

Rice Water

The water left over from cooking rice can be used for your hair treatment. Or simply sit the rice in water for 30 minutes, strain and use. This is a simple conditioner for your hair and is anecdotally said to give shiny hair, more strength and bounce, and keep natural colour longer. As with the other treatments outlined above, after washing with a good shampoo, rinse with the rice water, massage into the scalp thoroughly, leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse out.

Coconut Oil

Unlike the previous ‘recipes’ this is not a conditioner to be rinsed out, but rather a ‘hair mask’ to wear to bed. Instructions:  Take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, warm coconut oil in the microwave and massage it into damp hair, avoiding the roots. It is wise to tie your hair into a bun and/or cover it with a shower cap or hair wrap. Shampoo in the morning.

Castor Oil

Tis can be applied over wet or dry hair. Great for improving frizz and drying hair. Just rub a small amount of castor oil between your hands and apply a thin layer to frizz-prone areas on dry hair.
